The right tools will make the difference between a quick, easy repair and a sloppy ordeal.

Precision Screwdriver Set

A precision screwdriver set is a must have for any cell phone repair work. The sets are also fairly inexpensive. You can pick up one of these sets at the local hardware store for 5 or 6 dollars and a more complete set can be bought for only a few dollars more. I recommend looking for a set that includes Torx, Hex, Flat & Phillips head screwdrivers.

Plastic Tab / Guitar Pick

These are great for releasing retaining clips and removing cell phone covers; I use a guitar pick given to me by a friend. Guitar picks can be bought at Wal-Mart, or most any store like that. For only 2 or 3 dollars, you can buy a whole bunch of them. I have also seen them given away for free at music stores.

Rubbing Alcohol / Cotton Swabs

Most people have rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs lying around their house. Both are essential for cleaning cell phone keypads or cleaning trackballs. If you don’t have either of these, pick them up for a few dollars down at the drug store.

Get Started

Now you have all you need to be off and running. There are, of course, other things that would make the cell phone repair job a bit easier:

Static mat: A static mat is ideal to protect your cell phones from scratching.

Desk lamp: Pick up a good desk lamp, so you can see what you’re doing.

Digital camera: Several people prefer to take pictures of the repair job, so they don’t get lost later with which parts fit where.

So, armed with this knowledge, don’t be afraid to undertake your own cell phone repair.

If you have any questions on other cell phones that we don’t have listed, or even phones that we have written How-to guides for, please send us an email.
